MAINTAIN YOUR DRIVE TRAIN

The drive line is one of the most complicated parts of your vehicle, making repairs complex and quite expensive. More than that, a drive line problem can make your car unsafe. On the other hand, if taken good care of, your transmission can last a long time with no significant problems. Keeping it in good shape does not require much effort; just periodical checking and regular maintenance.

Most transmission troubles start from overheating. When under heavy load (such as towing a heavy trailer or “rocking” a vehicle in the snow) the transmission can overheat.  Over time, when continually exposed to higher temperatures, your transmission will fail. Other causes of drive-line failure include harsh driving, too low or too high transmission fluid level or wrong transmission fluid type.

So, can something be done to prevent transmission failure? Absolutely! In fact, you can take a few simple steps yourself to reduce your chance for serious drive-line damage:

  1. Regularly check your parking space for leaks. If you discover any, get it fixed before it causes something serious.

  2. Once in a while check the transmission fluid level and condition (if possible). Consult with your owner's manual for details. If the transmission fluid level is too low, there is a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.

  3. Change the fluid as often as your owner's manual suggests.

  4. Use only the same type of the transmission fluid as specified in the owner's manual. Some vehicles are very sensitive to fluid type.

  5. Never shift to Reverse or Parki until the car comes to a complete stop.

  6. Never shift from Park when the engine rpm is higher than normal idle.

  7. Always hold your brake down when shifting from Park.
